A drink I get: Black Coffee, Iced

  • Lokal Coffee

103 Miln St, Cranford, NJ 07016

A drink I get: Iced Cold Brew, Cheese Danish, and Turkey Club

Lokal is a cozy, comforting spot with a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for students and anyone to study and work. It’s a large cafe, separated into a food and coffee section, featuring a lot of paint and art. The coffee is good, and the food, even better. Their pastries can be toasted and the sandwiches are savory.

  • Now or Never

30 Grand St, New York, NY 10013

A drink I get: Iced Vietnamese Coffee

A stylish café with a laid-back vibe, Now or Never is known for its expertly balanced and smooth coffee, offering a rich flavor without being overwhelmed by a bitter coffee flavor. The cold coffee feels oddly comforting even on a chilly day, delivering smooth, non-bitter sips that linger pleasantly. Its cozy yet modern decor makes it a perfect spot for a quick coffee break or a slow moment to recharge.

  • Xing Fu Tang

    325 5th Ave, New York, NY 10016

A drink I get: Black Sesame Milk Tea (Less Ice, Extra Black Sesame, No Boba)

A bright and relaxed bubble tea café, Xing Tu Fang offers a spacious, comfortable setting with great seating options for those looking to unwind or catch up with friends. The vibe is chill and inviting, with bold flavors in their drinks that stay true to their ingredients, avoiding excessive sweetness. It’s a great spot to enjoy a well-balanced bubble tea with a refreshing twist in a vibrant yet cozy environment.

  • Matchaful

217 Mulberry St, New York, NY 10012

A drink I get: Vanilla Zen

A super hip café with a fresh, modern aesthetic, Matchaful is known for its sleek green and white color scheme, reflecting its commitment to organic, high-quality matcha. The minimalist decor and eco-conscious vibe create a relaxing, clean atmosphere perfect for enjoying their carefully crafted matcha drinks. Their matcha lattes, in particular, stand out for their neutral, earthy flavor—never overly sweet—offering a balanced and authentic matcha experience.

  • Inside Tully's Coffee, an array of drinks including a matcha green tea and a layered fruit and yogurt drink, presented on a tray with snacks.

With its wide variety of coffee drinks and snacks, it’s perfect for grabbing a quick coffee on the go or settling in for a relaxed work session. The warm lighting and friendly service create a welcoming community feel.

  • Sawawa café’s unique matcha ice cream cone topped with matcha-flavored cubes, served on a warm, sunny day.

Sa Wa Wa (Kyoto Matcha Sweets)

604-8136 Kyoto, Nakagyo Ward, Ruikecho, 319番地

A drink I get: Matcha Ice Cream with Warabimochi, Matcha Latte

Nestled in the historic streets of Kyoto, Sa wa wa offers an intimate space where matcha enthusiasts can indulge in high-quality matcha sweets and beverages. The cozy yet modern design blends traditional Japanese elements with a contemporary feel, creating an inviting atmosphere perfect for relaxing and savoring Kyoto’s tea heritage. It’s ideal for both locals and tourists looking to experience authentic matcha culture.

  • Display from Saryo Itoen featuring two glasses of vibrant green matcha with one glass being filled, capturing a dynamic pour.

    Saryo ITOEN

6-chōme-6-14 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan

A drink I get: Matcha Float

A tranquil teahouse located in the heart of Ginza, Saryo ITOEN offers a refined atmosphere where traditional Japanese tea culture takes center stage. The interior is minimalist and elegant, perfect for enjoying their variety of premium green teas and tea-based desserts. Whether for a quiet moment of reflection or a casual tea break, the ambiance invites calm and contemplation.

  • Bibble and Sip café showcasing a creative ice cream sandwich with vanilla ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies, presented in a brown paper box.

    Bibble and Sip

    253 W 51st St, New York, NY 10019

A drink I get: Mango Matcha Latte, and a Chooukie, a cookie cream puff

Bibble and Sip is a popular bubble tea spot but also features normal cafe items but also themed pastry and dessert items. Like macarons, cream puffs with a matcha latte – all of it is available in this small yet modern style cafe.

  • Interior of Boxwood café, showcasing a minimalist coffee bar with stylish shelving against a modern, well-lit backdrop.

    Boxwood

    143 E Broad St, Westfield, NJ 07090

A drink I get: Strawberry Shortcake Latte

From the outside, Boxwood looks like a hole in the wall coffee shop, but what makes Boxwood more impressive is that it roasts all its beans in house. There’s a giant roastery right behind the barista station, and you can smell it when you enter.

  • Koneko

26 Clinton St, New York, NY 10002

A drink I get: Cold Brew

When you see cat cafes in New York, it’s typically revolved around the cats with the cafe aspect being very boring and unimpressive. However Konami is a Japanese inspired cat cafe which has an amazing cat viewing section, but an impressive cafe menu. Japanese inspired snacks, and a simple cafe menu with baked goods make this cat cafe exceptional.

  • Interior of McNally Jackson café showing a rustic-modern coffee bar with wooden beams and contemporary lighting.

    McNally Jackson

4 Fulton St, New York, NY 10038

A drink I get: Iced Americano

Located at Seaport, from the outside you would assume that it’s a quaint bookstore, but there’s an entire upstairs section which is larger than a Barnes and Noble. This features a coffee and bar where baristas make both americanos and martinis while customers read.

  • Sweetea café's display shelf decorated with colorful mini pumpkins and themed mugs, suggesting a cozy, festive atmosphere.

    SweeTea

    28 E 33rd St., New York, NY 10016

A drink I get: Mango Milk Tea

SweeTea is a small bubble tea cafe that serves fruit teas and milk teas. It has a cute interior and is located off the street from Koreatown.

  • Prince Tea House

134 Bowery St., New York, NY 10013

A drink I get: English Toffee Milk Tea

Prince Tea House has plenty of locations in the LES and Chinatown and revolves around tea. You can get multiple pastries and tea goods like cucumber sandwiches and other finger food. I prefer the English Toffee Milk Tea with its subtle sweetness and creamy milk flavor.

  • A quaint setup at Grand Daddy café with a cold tea beverage placed next to a decorative blue fish holding a pinecone.

    Grand Daddy

290 Grand St, New York, NY 10002

    A drink I get: Japanese-style Iced Coffee

Grand Daddy is a cafe near Chinatown that has a cozy feeling. Couches, chairs, plenty of plants and a chalkboard menu. I ordered a Japanese style Iced Coffee which went well with the sunny day when we visited.

  • Kafe de Manila featuring a vibrant ube-yam cold brew in a clear cup, topped with a pink lid, labeled with a customer's name.

    Kafe de Manila

12 Anderson St, Raritan, NJ 08869

A drink I get: Ube Cold Brew

This family owned cafe is located in a surprisingly heavy Filipino community and serves ube primarily into their drinks. Ube cold brew, ube lattes, and even desserts like ube crinkle cookies and banana pudding.

  • Two colorful yogurt drinks from Pal Park café, labeled 'Hey Yogurt', featuring strawberry and mango flavors in branded cups.

    Hey Yogurt

316 Broad Ave. Palisades Park, NJ 07650

A drink I get: Mango Yogurt

Hey Yogurt is a health conscious cafe focusing on yogurt drinks mixed with fresh fruit. It’s sweet, creamy, and tastes amazing. The mango yogurt drinks are aesthetic and look great on camera.

  • Umacha café interior decorated with hanging green plants and a menu board listing various toppings for drinks and ice cream.

    UMacha

    595 River Rd B113, Edgewater, NJ 07020

A drink I get: Kiss Me (Peach Tea, Less Ice, 30% Sugar, No Pearls)

UMacha is a bubble tea cafe located on the edge of the water. It’s a comforting bright cafe with plants hanging from the ceiling, and plenty of bubble tea classics with a seasonal menu.

  • Close-up of a cold brew coffee in a clear plastic cup with a purple lid, set on an outdoor table at Ambee Coffee.

    Ambee Coffee

    37 W Main St, Somerville, NJ 08876

A drink I get: Flat White (this Ube Cold Foam is good too)

Ambee Coffee is one of those hip coffee spots, featuring a section for a live band, a rotating menu, and a bar to do work at. It is a very coffee lover coffee shop, with the classics being a staple at the cafe.

  • Dulce café corner with a tall coffee and a flaky pastry on a wooden board, accented with a red flower, against a backdrop of vibrant green chairs and black tables.

    Dulce

    196 W Main St, Somerville, NJ 08876

A drink I get: Butterfly Pea Flower Tea or Iced Vietnamese Coffee

As this is being written, Dulce has unfortunately closed. However when it was open, it was one of my favorite spots to grab food. It’s a fusion of a Vietnamese and (Guatemalan) cafe, with guava pastries, Banh Mi, and drinks from both cultures. The Vietnamese coffee is a classic but a drink that’s super unique is the Butterfly Pea Flower Tea which is an aesthetic drink that’s a light blue in color.

  • Casual setting inside Track 5 café with a wooden table and chair, featuring a cold coffee drink and a cup of water.

    Track5

5 Eastman St, Cranford, NJ 07016

A drink I get: Iced Cold Brew with Vanilla Cold Foam

Track 5 is a cafe that serves plenty of coffee options, one of my favorites being the cold brew with their wide selections of cold foams. It has a rustic feel with wooden and brick accents and features plenty of outside seating.

  • Interior of Ayala Coffee with a stylish counter, potted plants, and simple wooden furniture.

    Ayala Coffee

1917 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083

A drink I get: Buko Pandan Latte

Filipino themed coffee is something I actively look for. Ayala Coffee is a small coffee shop that features iconic Filipino dessert flavors like Buko Pandan, Ube, and Bibingka. They’re not overly sweet, the espresso doesn’t overpower the Filipino flavors, and it goes well with their short menu of pastries.

  • Notion Popup café scene with a hand holding a cold coffee branded with 'Notion' next to black sesame mochi.

    Notion Pop-up

    Somewhere, LES in NYC

A drink I get: Cold Brew with Oat Milk and Black Sesame Mochi Donut

Notion had a popup that featured their latest update in 2022. It’s clever since they printed their update on a newspaper, served it with free coffee and a donut. Mind you, the donut they served is a white chocolate with black sesame seeds (like the Notion logo).

  • Flour Bakery featuring a close-up of a freshly made sandwich with salmon and greens on multi-grain bread.

    Flour Bakery + Cafe

12 Farnsworth St, Boston, MA 02210

A drink I get: Cold Brew and Smoked Turkey Sandwich

Flour Bakery and Cafe is a homey cafe located in a random alleyway. However, when you step foot, it smells pastries on pastries. In fact from the ordering kiosk, you can see all the giant ovens they’re using to make the croissants and breads they’re serving throughout the day. They also make lunches like sandwiches. They cut this into a heart sandwich. It goes well with a coffee or a juice.

  • Interior of Tatte café with high ceilings and minimalist decor including white ductwork, large windows, and pendant lights.

    Tatte’s Bakery and Cafe

    200 Pier 4 Blvd., Boston, MA 02210

A drink I get: Iced Matcha Latte with a Shakshuka

Tatte’s is a chain that I always run into when I visit Boston. It’s mainly known for its shakshuka and its pastries, but has a wide variety of cafe drinks. I find myself ordering an iced matcha latte here. This with a Bacon and Potato Shakshuka is good before a long Amtrak ride.

  • Scenic urban waterfront near Levain Bakery showcasing tall buildings, construction cranes, and pedestrians on a bridge.

    Levain Bakery

180 Newbury St, Boston, MA 02116

    A drink I get: Mocha

Levain Bakery is a chain with locations in New York and Boston, and like your coffee and baked good chains, they have a simple menu and good pastries. Specifically I went to a Levain Bakery when it was cooler in Autumn, so a chocolate chip cookie with a warm mocha hit the spot. The cookie is so hot the chips were still melted, and the cookie itself was a gooey on the inside, crispy on the inside cookie.

  • Pierre and Michel café table with an elegantly served cappuccino with chocolate drizzle and a pastry tart topped with a raspberry.

    Pierre & Michel French Bakery

    78 W Main St, Somerville, NJ 08876

    A drink I get: Mocha

Pierre & Michel French Bakery is a bakery first but has some beautiful pastries: Tarts, cakes, and cream puffs. However, if you order a croissant, you also have to order a hot drink. While iced drinks are good, the hot drinks aren’t overly hot, meaning it’s a perfectly warm drink that makes your chest feel good. I personally order a Mocha, the chocolate has a good bitter and bold taste.

  • Coffee Potter café drive-through featuring a green sign promoting a new Lavender Honey Latte, surrounded by a tidy landscape and a brick building.

    Coffee Potter

24 Schooley’s Mountain Road, Long Valley, NJ, 07853

A drink I get: Vanilla Latte

A hometown favorite, Coffee Potter has this “I’m back home” feeling. Its wooden interior with its simple menu means that every coffee order is going to be perfect. In fact, I visited Coffee Potter often when I visited my family during college. A classic I go to is a Vanilla Latte. It’s not overly sweet and has a good vanilla flavor.
